To teach in Holden Village is to find yourself challenged and be given a broad range of gifts.

Your task is still the same: instruct students but Holden gives a certain twist to things that couldn’t be imagined in a typical school. For instance, teachers may have classes built from a number of grade levels and class sizes might be from 1 to 8. In the winter, fires have to be start early in the day so the building is warm by the time students arrive – if they can get past the 10 or so feet of snow that piles up.

Obviously, one person cannot be endorsed in every subject a high school student needs so an effort is made to find a person who can integrate different subjects and use thematic lessons. Volunteers also come from the village to teach different subjects. These subjects have ranged from Calculus, Art, Drama, Spanish, US History, Environmental Ethics and Art History. Online Courses have also been implemented.

The range of courses and the depth the students reach is remarkable but not surprising as the student-teacher relationship extends beyond the school as Holden is such a tight knit community.
