Early
Life
Bill Veroske was born in Chelan, WA. While living twelve
miles up the Entiat Valley, he attended a one room school
with one teacher. He started working at a sawmill at
age fourteen before moving with siblings into a rented
house in Chelan to attend Chelan schools.
While attending CHS, he was a standout student-athlete.
Bill was Class President and ASB President. He was a
member of the football, baseball, and track team. He
was the holder of the district shot put record for 52
years. This record was later broken by another CHS student,
Michael Young, in 1994.
Upon graduating, Bill enrolled at the University of
Washington. In 1943, after one semester, he joined the
U.S. Air Force. Bill married his high school sweetheart,
Wilma Cox, in 1944. On December 21, 1945, he concluded
his military service. Beginning in 1948, he spent two
years in Veteran’s Hospital and one year at home
recovering from injuries incurred during military service.
Adulthood
Bill has been an integral part of the Chelan community
throughout his life. In 1950, he purchased his first
10 acre orchard. Bill continued in the orchard business
for nearly 40 years.
Throughout his life, Bill has been an excellent local
humanitarian. He served as Cub Master and founder of
Cub Scout Pack 59. He was a Chelan City Council member
and Chelan Mayor from 1958-61. Bill served as president
of the Echo Valley Ski Area, as well as the Lake Chelan
Men’s Golf Association.
Aside from his leadership positions, Bill has served
as a member of many community organizations. Some of
these include: Lake Chelan Community Hospital Foundation,
Chelan-Douglas County Farmer’s Home Administration
Loan Committee, Wenoka Credit Corporation Loan Committee,
Trout Inc. Board of Directors, Mission Ridge Volunteer
Ski Patrol, Lake Chelan Recreation Association, and
the Maintenance and Operations School Levy Committee. |
