May Day Flower Parade

Beep, Beep, Beep! Ugh, my alarm already? I don’t want to go to school! “It’s time to get up!” my mother yells, Now its time to drag myself out of bed and off to school. At least I have after school to look forward to. It’s May Day! I’m so excited I can’t sit still in any of my classes. Recess lacks its normal appeal, heck, even lunch doesn’t cut it for me today. I just can’t wait till that final bell rings... Ding! I leap from my seat and rush past the door. Now I can start searching for the prettiest flowers! I already know where I’ll look. My daddy’s garden is the perfect spot. He’s tended the flowers meticulously and it shows in how vibrant and full the flowers are now. There’s yellow, red, white, and pink tulips, red roses, white lilies, orange and yellow marigolds, and even some lavender! I’ve got the best flowers around I just know it! Oh and how beautifully fragrant they are, it’s a wonder people won’t smell me coming a mile away. I cut the bottom of the stems off and wrap the ends in wet paper towels, placing a rubber band on top and a ziplock bag over that to keep them moist and alive longer. Now I must get some colorful paper for decorations. I grab purple, yellow, green, and blue construction paper and put pretty stickers on it and wrap it around the flowers at their base. It creates a cone around them, like a basket. Now it’s time to add the best part! I get all the little chocolates and other little candies Mom bought yesterday. I place them inside the baskets I’ve made for each of my grandparents and my aunts and uncles. Then set them out ready to go for when Mom gets home. Mom gets home and I rush to show her my May baskets that I’ve worked so hard on. I bug her until it’s time to leave. Now we’re outside my grandparents’ house, hidden in the side alley. I grab their basket and sneak skillfully around the side of the house in the shrubs. For dramatic effect I belly crawl up the porch steps. Keeping low to the ground and out of sight. Placing the basket on the porch, I ring the bell. Ding Dong!!! Leaping off the porch and speeding like a bullet to the car, jumping the bushes I hid in previously. I slam the door and we’re out of there! Time for the next house. This never gets old! May Day is basically Ding Dong Ditch day. It’s great, only the person you play the prank on gets a reward for being part of the prank as well. Hence the basket. I do this every year on May 1st. It’s tradition, and I’ll keep doing it, even with my children someday. You’ve got to appreciate the person who thought of this holiday tradition cause it’s one of the funnest around!
