FAQ’s on Major Scales

 

Does this scale have flats or sharps in it?

·        If it’s name has a flat in it, the scale has flats.  (ex.  B flat major has 2 flats)

·        If it’s name has nothing, or a sharp in it, the scale has sharps.  (ex.  G has 1 sharps)

 

How many sharps are in the scale?

·        Take the name of the scale and go down one ½ step.

·        Find that note in the order of sharps.

·        Include that sharp and all others to the left of it in the order of sharps.

 

How many flats are in the scale?

·        Find the name of the scale in the order of flats.

·        Move one place to the right in the order of flats.

·        Include that flat and all others to the left of it in the order of flats.

 

How do I build chords?.

·        Major Chord:

o       Use the 1st, 3rd, and 5th notes of the major scale

·        Dominant 7th Chord:

o        Use the 1st, 3rd, 5th and FLAT 7th notes of the major scale

·        Major 7th Chord:

o       Use the 1st, 3rd, 5th and regular 7th notes of the major scale

·        Minor Chord:

o       Use the 1st, 3rd, and 5th notes of the minor scale

o       Use the 1st, FLAT 3rd, and 5th notes of the major scale

 

·    EXCEPTIONS TO MEMORIZE:

 

o     F major has 1 flat
