Expectations

Instruments:

All students are expected to provide quality musical instruments maintained in proper playing order.  Related supplies such as reeds, valve oil, sticks, etc… are also the responsibility of each individual musician.  Repairs, whenever possible should be made during the summer break and other school holidays.  If you have maintenance-replacement-guarantee (MRG) repairs should be done ASAP without delay.

The Lake Chelan School District offers large woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments for student use.  These instruments are costly and are reconditioned periodically.  They are in proper playing condition at the beginning of the year, and students electing to use a school instrument are expected to maintain and properly care for and store that instrument.  Students are liable for damages sustained from poor care and/or abuse.  Students using school instruments are also encouraged to purchase their own mouthpiece when applicable.

Percussionists must have their own set of drum sticks and keyboard mallets.  Brass players should have their own mutes and trumpet players should have both a straight and cup mute.

Sheet Music and Method Books:

Students are responsible for having the correct level of Essential Elements 2000 Band Method Book if applicable.   The school will provide the other necessary curriculum materials for study and performance.  It is each student’s responsibility to properly care for and store all sheet music and school purchased method books.  Students will be required to reimburse the school district for lost or damaged materials.

Practice/Homework:

Practice your parts at home, not during rehearsals.  Rehearsals are for understanding the big picture of a piece of music and how your part fits in.  It is expected that you will practice 60 or MORE minutes per week at home, complete written homework assignments on time, and come to rehearsals musically prepared.  Without strong individual parts, we can never get to the big picture of music making.

Be a Member of the Team.  Making a commitment to the band or choir is a big deal and should not be taken lightly.  We are only as good as our weakest link and it takes a commitment from everyone to strive for excellence.  Set goals for yourself as an individual performer, section member, and band or choir member.  Don’t let us or yourself down.  Help us make it happen.

Always:

Be on time.  3 tardies will result in an office referral.

Come prepared for class with your music, instrument, and pencil.

Do your Best!

Stay on-task with what is happening in class.  It may apply to you elsewhere.

Respect yourself and others.

Use appropriate behavior at all times.

Use only your assigned storage area.

Keep your storage area clean and tidy at all times.

Don’t:

Chew gum, eat, or drink in the music room.

Abuse equipment or materials.

Talk out of turn or participate in activities that will disrupt our ensemble’s progress.

Order of Operations for Rehearsals:

Seated with pencil, music, and instrument in hand 2 minutes after the late bell rings.

Organize music in accordance with the rehearsal order on the board.

Warm-up with scales, chorals, and sections of the music in the rehearsal order.

Get yourself physically and mentally prepared to rehearse as an active band or choir member.

Classroom Code/Norms:

Simply stated, you need to positively contribute to the classroom environment.  If you find yourself with a problem, you may solve it by any means that does not cause a problem for you or anyone around you.  For safety issues, gum, mints, and food will not be allowed in the music room.  Except for special occasions, no food or beverage other than water will be allowed in the music room.  Unkind or disrespectful words and actions are not acceptable and will not be tolerated.

Classroom Management:

In the event of a blatant and/or rebellious disregard for the Classroom Code/Norms, (ex. fighting, refusal to comply, etc.) Mr. DePaoli, Mr. Raab, and Mr. Gleasman will intervene.

Performance Expectation:

All performances are required.  After all of our ensemble’s hard work, it is not fair to you or the other members of the ensemble if someone is absent from a performance experience.  Assignments such as performances are very difficult to make up, since the overall experience can not be easily reproduced.  Please respect your hard work and the hard work of others and be proud of our musical presentation by performing at all required events.
