For Immediate Release—The Chelan High School Agriculture Education Shop was the site of the 2008 Edition of District VII “Barnyard Wars”.  Eight teams representing four schools from North Central Washington participated in this unique annual event.

The teams were made up of four members and as a team they were given three surplus school desks, seven surplus table legs, three wooden wheels and a fifteen foot chunk of rope.  They had to then design and build a device to lift a ninety pound weight using only the power of one of the team members.  Teams had only one trail to lift the weight and each structure had to include an oxy-acetylene cut, gas brazing bead, gas bead with rod, plasma cut, and MIG welding structural joint.

The Wenatchee 1 team won the event with a score of 328 points.

Chelan team 2 was second with a score of 325.  Tonasket was 3rd. Cashmere 4th, Chelan 3, Chelan 4, and Chelan 1 rounded out the eight team field.  The Chelan Team #2 was made up of Tucker Cool, Tommy Moro, Jose Villasenor, and Zac Sandum.  Their machine placed 4th in the lifting but their skills graded out 1st. They spotted the Wenatchee team 75 points on the lifting portion of the contest and almost caught them with the skill grades.  The other competitors for Chelan included Jose Venegas, Zaren Sandum, Matt Pittsinger, Blake Soreano, Mike Banks, Cory Dowell, Ross Young, John Griffith, Daniejha Weigel, Gerrick Lutz, and Andrew Jones.

Prizes for the competitors were provided by All Seasons’ Rental, Kelly’s Hardware, NAPA Auto Parts, Jerry’s Auto, and NORCO Welding Supply.  Rich Gutzwiler from NORCO was the judge for the skills portion of the event.
