COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Human Development is a comprehensive vocational course designed to prepare students to make decisions, solve problems and achieve goals individually and in groups.  Students will gain knowledge of human development, conception, prenatal development, children from birth through eight, and all stages of the human life cycle.  Students will visit child care facilities available for different age groups.  They will work with preschool and kindergarten children one day per week during the year, gaining hands-on experience, and culminating in a lesson created and taught by the students.  Students will be able to correctly write three forms of behavioral observations for children.  They will learn responsibilities of parenting by becoming proud parents of “Real Care” infant manikins for 48 hours.  Career pathways in human or social services, education and pediatrics will be explored.  College credit is available through Central Washington University Cornerstone EDEC 292 or Wenatchee Valley College ECE 101 and 102.

GRADING:        Your grade is determined by points earned on assignments, quizzes, tests, class participation, projects and attendance.  Points you earn will be tallied and compared with the total points possible, then converted to a percentage to determine your letter grade.  Letter grades will be earned based on a 10% scale, with 60% being the lowest possible passing grade.  If you have a borderline grade, 1% bonus will be given to any student with no missing work.  Leadership points are required for each student.  In addition to the required 50 points, a student may earn up to 50 more leadership points (optional) as extra credit.

 

 

ATTENDANCE: 

1.        Students are expected to attend class on a regular basis and to be punctual.  Poor attendance can have a negative effect on your grade.   

2.        Students entering class late or not in their seats when the bell rings will be marked tardy.  The first and second tardy with result in an after school working detention   (1st tardy-15 minutes, 2nd tardy – 30 minutes).  The third tardy will result in a discipline referral to the office.

 

 

 

 

ASSIGNMENTS:

1.            Students may make up missed written work (due to absence); but since valuable classroom activities cannot be made up, the overall grade will reflect the absences.

2.            It is the student’s responsibility to obtain make up assignments from me and collect work from the absent work box within two days of returning to class.

3.            Work may be turned in one day late for 50% credit.

4.            Unless special circumstances occur, there will be no test retakes.

5.            Extra credit will be available in the form of leadership points (in addition to the required 50 points for leadership).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

RULES:            Students will:

 

Be courteous.  During formal class discussions and lecture, only one person should speak at one time.  Raise your hand and wait to be called on before speaking.  Adhere to the school’s rules governing acceptable conduct. Name calling and/or obscene language will not be tolerated.  Unless working in a group situation, students are expected to do their own work!

 

Be prepared for class.  Bring a notebook, paper and writing tool to class every day.  Keep EVERYTHING     from class in your notebook until the end of a unit. Then you will choose 2-3 pieces of your best work from the unit to keep for a portfolio to be submitted at the end of the year.

 

Not bring food or beverages into the classroom UNLESS connected with a class activity.

 

                        Instructor will:

Teach to different learning styles.

 

Encourage thinking and problem solving, as well as teamwork.

 

Provide an environment for learning and assign homework.

 

Listen and be available for help.
