Afters Synopsis

 

Both academic and enrichment activities are offered through the Afters program.  Afters is free of charge to participants. Transportation and a healthy snack are provided.

 

MOE students are offered an average of 20 Afters Enrichment class choices in three, six-week sessions.  Over 200 students attend these classes at MOE each session, Monday through Thursday from 2:50 – 4:30. 

 

Academic Afters programs are ongoing throughout the school year with students attending either two or four days per week.   Over 250 students attend Academic Afters in a school year. 

 

ACADEMIC AFTERS PROGRAMS

 

21st Century Afters

Over 70 students from 3rd 4th and 5th grade attend 21st Century Afters two days per week every week to practice reading and math skills that will assist them on the WASL and in the classroom.  Curriculum: Kidzlit reading activities (to improve reading comprehension); Teacher-to Teacher math activities (to sharpen problem solving strategies and prepare for WASL scoring); Rocket Math (practice in math skills)   Classes are taught by Activity Leaders with a minimum of two years of college.  Lesson plans are designed by a certificated teacher in cooperation with the classroom teachers.  All students are referred by teachers and parents.  The program is twenty weeks, Monday through Thursday, from September through April.

 

Reading Reinforcement

Over 130 students from Kindergarten through 2nd grade attend the Reading Reinforcement Afters two days per week to participate in fun, hands-on activities that help with reading and literacy skills.  Classes are taught by MOE classroom teachers at each grade level who align the activities closely to skills the students need to practice.  All students are referred by teachers and parents.  The program is eight weeks, Monday through Thursday, from January – March. 

 

 

TARGET Afters

Over 70 students from 3rd – 5th grades are referred to the TARGET Afters program two days per week every week from September through April.  The goal is to offer students practice in specific skills they need to achieve prior to exiting their grade level.   Teachers determine the skills to be taught and students are referred for the skills they need to learn according to the Accountability Policy.  Classes include specific areas of math, reading and writing to help students who are struggling in these areas. 

 

Afters Enrichment

 

Afters Enrichment is designed to involve students in wholesome after school pursuits.  Approximately 250 students at MOE and 60 at CMS attend these classes.  Various classes are offered in six -week sessions:

·   Arts-related activities (dance, music, art, crafts, culinary, etc.)

·   Activities to help students with behavioral skills (following directions, self-discipline, self-esteem, improve attention, cooperation, etc.)

·   Activities to help students develop new interests / abilities

·   Activities to challenge highly capable /gifted students

·   Activities that promote physical fitness

Afters Enrichment classes are often taught by community members.  Registrations are sent home two weeks prior to classes and students prioritize their class choices.  Every effort is made to give students at least one class of their choice.  Afters gives students a chance to develop new friendships with their peers and positive relationships with their school and caring adults.  These activities ensure that students are safe after school and that they are engaged in productive activities.
