Why do we have Reading Buddies?

1^st graders are just beginning to read. An important part of learning to read is practice. Each student practices books at his or her independent reading level during the week. At the end of the week our 4^th or 5^th grade Buddies come to our room to listen to us read. My 1^st graders love this and really look forward to it. It also motivates them to do their best reading. We always make a point of writing letters to our Buddies as well, which is a very meaningful writing lesson.

But the most important reason to have a Buddy is that it is fun!
