          Welcome to Mrs. Bowers’ 8th Grade Remedial Reading class!  I am looking forward to a great year!  The following information will help us to have a successful and rewarding year.  Please sign the attached sheet and return by Wednesday, September 14, 2005.

          The 8th Grade Remedial Reading class is set up to reinforce the CORE class in reading instruction and reading strategies.  The smaller class size is intended to provide more individualized reading instruction in the areas of comprehension and vocabulary through fiction and non-fiction reading selections.  In other words, we will be reading and responding to many types of text including:  poetry, essays, short stories, biographies, encyclopedias, pamphlets, textbook excerpts, newspaper and magazine articles, schedules, maps, recipes, instructions, menus, travel logs, catalogs, manuals, and the yellow pages.  The students will also review phonics’ rules and play vocabulary games.  I would like to take the students in to the community for a “Reading in Real Life” field trip once per semester.

Classroom Expectations

  • Bring all necessary materials to class. (Binder, planner, pencil, and book)
  • Be on time and ready to work with a good attitude!
  • Follow the directions the FIRST time given.
  • Respect yourself and others.
  • Follow general school rules.

Tardy Consequences

  • 1st Tardy – Warning from teacher
  • 2nd Tardy – 15 minute lunch detention
  • 3rd Tardy – Office referral to Mr. DePaoli

Grading Policy

  • Daily Assignments/Writing/Projects                  60%
  • Tests/Quizzes                                                  30%
  • Class participation/On task                               10%

**Late work is not accepted and will be scored as a zero.  In the event of an excused absence, a student may have the same number of days missed to make up any missing work.  Students who know in advance should get the assignments prior to missing school.**
