2006-07 Math Guidelines

Course Description

The curriculum of Chelan Middle School closely follows the Grade Level Expectations provided by the State of Washington.  The students will become proficient in computation with rational numbers and use proportions to solve a variety of problems.  The will understand the need for precision when measuring and use derived units of measure.  They will learn the concept of distance and the relationship between distance and the Pythagorean Theorem.  They recognize three-dimensional shapes represented in two-dimensional drawings and apply transformations to geometric shapes in a coordinate plane.  Eighth graders will find probability of compound events and analyze bivariate data sets.  They will also learn to understand recursive forms of linear and exponential relationships and solve two-step equations and inequalities.

Grading Policy

Homework can be expected up to four nights per week.  I will be checking student’s work for completeness and presentation (neatness).  Students will grade each other’s work for accuracy.  Time will be allowed at the end of most periods to work on assignments.  I encourage students to ask for help and will be available at this time.  I am also available before and after school on a limited basis.  Although I encourage students to work together to arrive at solutions, I also expect them to be honest and ask for help when they don’t understand a concept.

Quizzes will be given on a weekly basis to check for understanding.  Tests are administered following the completion of units of instruction, about once every two to three weeks.

The final grade will be determined by the following criteria:

                                                Homework Average   20%

                                                Quiz Average             30%

                                                Test Average             50%

                                                Total                           100%

Grading Policy (cont’d)

Letter grades will be based on the cumulative percent as follows:

A  = 93-100%             B+ = 87-89%              C+ = 77-79%              D+ = 67-69%

A- = 90-92%               B   = 83-86%              C   = 73-76%              D   = 63-66%

                                    B-  = 80-82%              C-  = 70-72%              D-  = 60-62%

An average of less than 60% will result in a failing grade.

Classroom Rules

1.         Be on time      This means that you should be in the classroom before the final

bell rings.  It also applies to your assignments; they must be completed on or before the due date in order to receive full credit.

2.         Be prepared   This means you have come prepared to go to work.  You must

have all required materials (books, paper, pencil, etc.) with you

                                    when you come to class.

3.         Be on task      Follow directions the first time they are given.  Disruptive

behavior will not be tolerated.  All students have the right to learn in a safe environment free of outside interference.

4.   Be honest       I expect your best effort, and you should expect no less from me.

You must learn to accountable for your own work.

Attendance Policy

Our attendance policy is outlined in the student planner.  This is the same as in my class.  You will have an additional day to complete work for each excused day you miss.  Students are expected to check ahead for prearranged absences and have assigned work completed and ready to turn in on the day they return.  Incomplete assignments will result in failing scores.
