Dear Parent,

I am happy that your child is in my class this year.  I am looking forward to many fun and exciting experiences as the year progresses.  This is a brief description of what your child will be doing in Core class this year as well as some class expectations.

Core class is an integration of language and social studies.  Core is graded on daily assignments, tests and projects.  All students are required to turn in assignments on time with correct heading.  Late work is not accepted, unless the student has an excused absence or extreme extenuating circumstances.  Students with an excused absence may have extra days equal to the amount of time missed to make up missing work.  Students are responsible for turning in and asking for missing work on return from an absence.  Due dates for all major projects and tests will announced well in advance so you can help your child plan and study.

The language portion of class will use Accelerated Writer and the Write Source 2000 curriculum.  They are based on teaching the skills of six-trait writing as well as focusing on grammar, and editing skills.  We also have weekly spelling units, with tests on either Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

In Social Studies students will study the Eastern Hemisphere. The focus begins with ancient civilizations such as the Greeks and Egyptians.  Studies continue with the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and early Europe.  The year culminates with The World Game, a comprehensive study of geography, economy, and politics.

In order to fit all of this learning in, I ask that students follow some simple behavior guidelines:  1) Follow directions the first time given, 2) Keep hands, feet and object to self, 3) No put-downs or swearing, and 4) Bring all necessary materials to class.  By following these guidelines students can expect to receive praise and occasional special privileges.  Consequences for not following these guidelines would include a verbal warning or the student phoning home.  On rare occasion do I make an office referral.  A severe disruption of any sort would mean immediate removal to the office.  I do my best to work with students to help them learn how to avoid these kinds of consequences, so that we can not only maximize learning but have fun with it as well!

I am looking forward to enjoying an exciting and productive year with your child.  Please contact me if you have any questions regarding this homework policy or any other matter.  I am available before and after school and from 11:40 – 12:15.

Thanks,

Lori Jenkins
