REGULAR BOARD MEETING
MINUTES

Kim Thorpe called the meeting to order at 6:00pm.

Jeff moved and Barb seconded a motion to approve the consent agenda as presented; motion carried.
REPORTS
- Summer STEAM Report – Julie Spanjer
Julie shared a presentation about the Summer STEAM program with lots of photos and quotes from the students about their experience. Having new teachers as part of the Summer STEAM program was fun as it gave the teachers an opportunity to create a smaller community within the teaching staff before the new teachers go to their regular classes. Some of the paraeducators for this program are current CHS students who have been in the Mentor Teacher class with April Slagle.
- Chelan Middle School – Brian Wood
Brian shared a presentation about current issues at CMS: mascot change from Pirates to Goats, professional development, and the beginning of the school year.
BRIEF UPDATES
- Athletics – Evan Reister
There are 144 HS students signed up for fall athletics.
Smoke has taken practices indoors a couple times, but not bad so far.
Evan is working with the coaches on setting some new athletics goals in retention rates, sportsmanship, and athlete roles on each team.
GoFan is the new online application to purchase event tickets.
Meet the Goats was a fun night of the parents, students, and community members out to meet the CHS athletes.
A full scoreboard was donated to the district by Colville Fuels. The district is working with the city on permits for installation.
- Morgen Owings Elementary – Erin Morin
Kinder screenings will start this week with students and parents during scheduled times.
468 students are expected with more students coming in before the 1st count day on Sept. 8, 2023.
Student dismissal will be on Navarre Road by the undercover area. This is to alleviate the car backups on Woodin Ave (State Route 97A / Highway 150).
Four students are starting the 2023-24 year at Holden Village with a couple more moving there soon.
- Chelan School of Innovation – Terry Sanders
There are 3 new staff members, Eric Kurle, Erik Romero, and Dee Thornton.
There will be an all staff/student breakfast and student planned orientations in the first couple of weeks.
There will be professional development for staff on project-based learning and student safety.
Updates to the CSI/CDA classrooms over the summer included carpet, painting, cameras, and single point entry.
- Chelan High School – Jamie Pancho
Student ASB leadership has been working on welcome back assemblies for the student body for beginning of school.
Watching the staff act as students during professional development has been inspirational.
Students don’t rest during the summer, they are working, involved in club events, and attending the regional fairs.
There are new CTE Certifications available for students starting this year in Commercial Art, Certified Nursing Assistant, and Construction.
SUPERINTENDENT REPORT
- Celebrations
Brad thanked Jenann, Tiffany, Frank, Tiffany, Sarah, and Terry, for getting the new certified staff off to great start on August 16th and 17th during the new certified staff trainings.
FLO Analytics reviewed enrollment numbers at community, county, and statewide levels. They also looked at student counts in LCSD over time and grade levels. Brad shared a report of their numbers and answered questions.
FINANCIAL REPORTS
- Enrollment and Financial – Fabi Lara
The first enrollment count day of the year will be September 8, 2023.
Fabi went over all the financial reports for the month of July. She answered any questions.
BOARD POLICIES / ACTION ITEMS
- BP 5253 & Procedure – Maintaining Professional Staff Student Boundaries (2nd read)
There was a discussion about some of the paragraphs and changes that Brad suggested.
The Board requested to bring the policy and procedure back to the next meeting cleaned up.
- Resolution 2023 – 05 CMS Mascot Change
There was discussion about why the students wanting to change their school mascot and the work that they did over the past school year.
Jeff moved and Barb seconded a motion to table this resolution until the next meeting; motion carried.
EXECUTIVE SESSION
- To discuss the selection of a site or the acquisition of real estate if public knowledge of the matter might increase the price with no action to be taken. RCW42.30.110
Kim Thorpe moved the Board to executive session at 7:18pm to discuss the selection of a site or the acquisition of real estate if public knowledge of the matter might increase the price with no action to be taken.
ADJOURNMENT
Kim Thorpe reconvened the board to regular session and adjourned the meeting at 7:27 pm.
