CONSENT AGENDA
- Approval of Agenda
- Approval of Minutes – February 24, 2025
- Payables
- Personnel
- Surplus
- 2025-2026 Preschool Calendar
- 2024-2026 Holden Village Calendar
Barb moved and Christy seconded a motion to approve the consent agenda without the approval for 8th graders participating in HS sports as needed; motion carried.
- Approval for 8th graders to participate in HS Spring Sports as needed
This action item was removed from the consent agenda to have the opportunity for more discussion.
Kim Thorpe opened the discussion about allowing 8th graders to play up to fill the CHS teams as needed. This would include tennis, golf, and baseball where CMS does not have any teams. Most of the discussion was about softball, as CMS has a 7th and 8th grade softball program. For 8th graders to practice and play on the high school teams there needs to be Board approval and League approval. Currently there is no approval for 8th graders to practice or play at the high school level in these sports.
There has been concern about the number of HS softball players who have turned out for the 2024-25 season. As of 3/10 the roster has only 8 eligible athletes, with 12 students on the team. With this number there may be 5-7 games that may need to be forfeited. Shortage in the number of players at the HS level can affect games and state berth allocations.
Amber Corrigan shared her family’s experience with her 8th grader playing up to the HS level.
Jamie Mack shared her family’s experience with her 8th grader playing up the HS level.
Rudy Valdez, CMS Softball Coach and parent of an 8th grade player, shared his perspective on the value of keeping 8th graders down on the CMS team.
Brandon Gardner, parent of an 8th grade player, asked how many HS students came to practice and stated that there are several more practice opportunities for students to qualify. WIAA states that the school can bring up 8th graders at anytime during the season to fill in at games so that the team doesn’t have to forfeit. He suggested that there be a meeting of parents, coaches, athletes and the AD for education and communication.
Lisa Gleasman, CMS Volleyball and Basketball Coach, shared several concerns for the students on many levels. Should this be decided this year, will it be fair to take 8th graders away from their program in the middle of the season to play up in high school games?
Jamie Pancho, high school principal and administrator in charge of softball, spoke to how moving 8th graders up to the HS level works and shared there are 20 games in a softball season.
Erik made a motion and Barb seconded to approve the opportunity to move 8th graders up to HS sports in tennis, baseball, golf, and softball for practice only at this time; motion carried.
