CMS ACTIVITIES

The sixth grade class at CMS has the opportunity each year to participate in an Outdoor Education Program. Normally, since its inception, students, teachers Forest Service personal, additional volunteers, and presenters have traveled up-lake to Holden Village for this adventure.

Due to the Holden Mine Remediation currently taking place around the village, our last 2 years, as well as this upcoming year, we will travel to the North Cascades Institute on Highway 20. For this outdoor educational experience, we divide the 6th graders into 2 groups, one attending M-W and the other going on W-F. The staff at NCI provides our students with 2 1/2 days’ worth of highly engaging outdoor (mainly) and indoor activities. This year’s 2016 trip will be taking place during the week of May 23 – 27. More details to follow, as the date approaches. Please feel free to contact any of the 6th grade teachers for additional information.

ASB’s goal is to make students feel welcome. Fun activities are a part of our everyday planning. Some of those activities are pep rallies each season to celebrate athletic groups and clubs, Reindeer Games, WE Scare Hunger, WE Create Change, Veteran’s Day Assembly, MLK Celebration, Val-O-Grams, teacher appreciation, staff appreciation, activity nights and much more! There are currently 62 members of ASB all wanting the best for our school.

Science Olympiad is a national competition where students compete in 23 team events from nearly every discipline of science and engineering. . Some events involve building projects, others require studying or the application of material learned in everyday science classes. A portion of the events are rotated every year to reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, astronomy, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. Each school-based team brings up to 15 students who cross-train for a variety of events of their choice and in their skill set. Practice starts in December. The regional competition is in early March, where teams battle to qualify for the state and possible national competitions. By combining events from all disciplines, Science Olympiad encourages a wide variety of students to get involved. All students in 6th through 8th grade may participate.
