Additionally, Evan shared an update on the district safety and security team, including areas of focus. The possibility of adding a Meet the Goats event for winter and spring seasons was discussed.
UPDATES
- Student Update
Eva shared some examples of how students are approaching staying caught up on work while taking numerous rigorous college level classes. One example was the value in students working together on projects and studying for exams.
Joslyn shared that as a senior, there is a major focus on getting college applications and scholarship applications completed. She was able to attend the FAFSA workshop night hosted at CHS earlier this year.
- Legislative
This year is a short legislative session. The focus continues to be on securing adequate funding for K-12 education, especially in the areas of MSOC and Special Education. Poor state revenue projections have created worry about potential budget cuts.
SUPERINTENDENT
- Election Review – Dr. Gene Sementi
Dr. Sementi reviewed the data from the recent election with special attention paid to the high percentage of voters ages 55 and over who voted compared to low percentages of those under age 55. Also discussed were action steps to review the voter turnout data and collect community feedback in order to prepare for another ballot measure in 2026 or 2027. The board shared feedback that they have heard informally about the November bond measure that did not pass.
- Cell Phone Discussion
Discussion was held regarding a proposal from Mr. Bovingdon and Ms. Slagle to ban cell phones at the middle school and high school via the use of magnetic locking pouches. Initial research shows that the majority of schools in the area who ban phones at all levels have done so via a bell-to-bell ban that calls for phones to not be visible on campus from the start of the day until the end of the day. Wenatchee and Omak school districts are utilizing Yonder pouches with varying results. Concerns shared include students not being able to communicate with parents during an emergency, ways of enforcing the use of locking pouches, and the cost of locking pouches and yearly replacements, and students going off campus for lunch not having access to electronic payment options.
More research and discussion will follow.
