REPORTS & UPDATES

  • Legislative Update – Stephanie Fuller

WASA (WA Association of School Administrators) representatives are asking where the governor and the legislature stand on priorities for the state budget. They are talking about the funding to schools, unfunded mandates, TK programs, tort reform and liability costs, public records requests, and graduation requirements.

OSPI proposes schools should mandate a state course for seniors for some level of fiscal and life skills. They are also proposing fiscal training for directors.

The Governor would also like to make the FAFSA completion part of the graduation requirements. At this time CHS was able to get over 70% of the families to complete the FAFSA or WASFA documents last year.

The governor’s proposed budget will come out in December.  While there will be new legislation after elections, WASA and WSSDA will be focusing on school district needs.

The governor wants free meals for all students statewide. Students in the LCSD currently participate in the federal program Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), meaning all student meals are no cost to students or families.
